Captains Wood

Managed by the excellent Suffolk Wildlife Trust, this is one of our favourite woods in the area. It has a light, airy, peaceful atmosphere with ancient trees, fallow deer and one of the greatest expanses of bluebells in the county.

Snape Maltings

Famed for its music, Snape also has cafés, shops, galleries, beautiful nature walks (simply following the signposts) and river trips through the spring and summer. There is also a monthly farmers market.

Rendlesham Forest

Rendlesham Forest Centre is the main recreation area for the Sandlings Forests, Heaths and the connected Sandlings Walks stretching from Bixley, near Ipswich all the way up to Southwold.

There are many events throughout the year which are listed on their website and there is play equipment and circular cycle and walking routes through the forest.

RSPB Minsmere Nature Reserve

With it’s wild landscapes and open skies, the Centre has many special events and choice of circular nature walks and birdwatching hides. You may even see the semi-wild horses and red deer. Binocular hire is only £2.50 + deposit

Dunwich Heath Coastal Centre & Beach

This is a huge area of beautiful coastal heath land with well sign posted walks through the purple heather and along the cliff tops. There are great views over the North Sea. There’s also a long pebble beach, great for a walk to RSPB Minsmere Nature Reserve or to the village of Dunwich.

The Café, set in the old coastguard cottages,  serves hot and cold food, drinks and ice creams on the cliff above the beach.

Near Dunwich is RSPB Dingle Marshes.

Iken Canoe

Iken Canoe hires out a range of paddle craft on the stunning upper reaches of the River Alde, between Snape and Aldeburgh. They also offer a range of guided tours on the water at various time of the year
